Otoplasty, commonly referred to as ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure used to change the shape, position or size of the ears. Let’s take a look at a few reasons you may elect to undergo otoplasty and how the procedure works.
Common Reasons for Otoplasty
A few reasons patients may undergo otoplasty include:
- The ears are too large in proportion to the head
- The ears protrude away from the head
- The ears are asymmetrical
- The ears are mishappen due to injury or congenital issues
Anyone can undergo otoplasty once their ears have reached full size, usually after age five.
How Does Otoplasty Work?
Before an otoplasty, your provider will review your medical history, do a physical exam and discuss your cosmetic expectations. If your provider believes you are a candidate for otoplasty, they will schedule an appointment and give you a set of pre-surgery instructions. These instructions may include information on avoiding certain medications and foods and stopping smoking before and after the surgery. Most otoplasties are performed under local or general anesthesia and follow these steps:
- Your provider will make incisions on the backs or inner creases of your ears
- Next, they will remove any excess cartilage and skin
- They will then fold the cartilage into the desired position and secure it with internal stitches
- Finally, they will close the incisions with additional stitches and bandage the area
Most otoplasties take about two hours to perform. Following the procedure, your provider may recommend a few aftercare tips:
- Take provider-approved pain medication as needed to minimize discomfort.
- Do not sleep on your side or wear headphones for a few weeks following your procedure.
- After your bandages are removed, wear a loose headband to bed to protect your ears while sleeping.
- Talk to your provider before resuming physical activities. While pick-up games at Sandy Creek Park are fun, a football to the side of the head can be detrimental to your otoplasty recovery.
Once your bandages are off and your ears have fully healed, embrace your new hearing with confidence and joy. For more information on otoplasty, contact Facial Plastics Center at ENT of Athens today.
