You probably already know how often you need to check in with your primary care provider or go to the dentist for a cleaning. However, you might not be sure when to see an audiologist.
Let’s examine a few key issues that require making an appointment with a hearing health provider.
Earwax Buildup Causing Problems
Earwax blockage can be caused by several different factors including:
- Overproduction of earwax
- Insufficient cleaning
- Incorrect ear wax removal attempts at home
- Use of earplugs or earphones
Often times when people try to clean their ears with a cotton swab, they can end up pushing the wax deeper inside the ear, which can lead to impaction.
Earwax buildup is a common problem. A study of 328 school-aged children showed that almost 25% had earwax compaction.
If you or your child experience symptoms of earwax buildup including fullness, ringing in the ear, and/or hearing loss, make an appointment with an audiologist as soon as possible.
Signs of Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can come on gradually. However, there are often early signs that may indicate you have a problem. If you exhibit any of them, it’s important to make an appointment with an audiologist for a hearing test right away. Signs of hearing loss include:
- Asking others to repeat themselves often or thinking that everyone is mumbling.
- Difficulty following group conversations
- Having a hard time hearing in places with background noise, such as South Kitchen + Bar.
- Struggling to hear higher-pitched voices
- Having others comment that the TV or radio is too loud when you’re listening
Ringing in the Ears
Tinnitus is a common problem that affects millions of people in the US every year. It is usually described as a ringing in the ears; however, some people experience a humming, buzzing, whooshing or other noise.
Oftentimes, tinnitus can be a sign of another problem. For a smaller percentage of people with the condition, tinnitus can severely impact their quality of life. It can increase anxiety, disrupt sleep and make it hard to function in your day-to-day life.
It’s important to see an audiologist if you experience tinnitus to try and identify the cause and manage your symptoms.
Hearing Aid Checkup
If you have hearing aids, you should schedule regular checkups with your audiologist every six months to a year. Hearing needs change over time. Your audiologist can perform any adjustments and make sure your hearing aids are equipped to provide you with the best hearing experience possible.
